Sorting out various items for my elderly cousin I was handed two small 'medals' that were destined for Dundee Museum. I am not in the collecting field, well not Medals, but my interest was piqued as I had never seen anything like them.
A bit of research on the Internet revealed of course that the two 'medals' were in fact medallions presented to Officers and Men who had returned from the Boer War. All that I guess is pretty well standard but what puzzled me about these two medallions is that one is of Silver, confirmed in various articles, but the other is Gold with the exact same details front and back presented to the same Private.
In my research on the internet I came across only one British Tribute Medallion in gold and that was to an Officer.
The gold Medallion is slightly larger than the silver one with a different fitting and I have the suspicion that it was made especially, perhaps by subscription of friends or maybe as a necklace for his wife.
Anybody know otherwise?
Attached is a photo
of both. Cheers, Jacobus.
