Thanks Mike - I'm having a tilt at this but won't be going very high on account of condition. He is on the Namaqualand TG roll for the QSA. Interestingly the only people I can trace with that surname in SA are of Muslim/Indian extraction.

Lovely medal, very honest repair, shows someone cherished it. Being sold in the next door town to me, who is this?

Isman is crossed out on QSA roll - and does not have the remark "white".

Rory - your findings and the QSA roll tally.

Mike - Jappie Brown is on the TG roll, not "white" but engaged with the enemy.

Hi

The silver O'Okiep medal to Major J L Dean, Namaqualand Town Guard, was sold today for a bid of 15000 GBP.

The QSA is missing from the lot.

The description was as follows:
rare Boer War Siege of O'okiep (1902), Cape Copper Company silver-gilt medal to Major J.L. Dean sold with a silver cigar box and table lighter presented to Major Dean in recognition of his service by the commanding officer at the Siege: the medal named to J.L. Dean in impressed upright capitals; the cigar box hallmarked for Chester 1901 and bearing the inscription to the cover "Presented to Major J.L. Dean, Commandant, Namaqualand Town Guard Bttn. and O'okiep, by Lieut. Colonel W. Shelton, Commanding the District and the Officers of the Namaqualand Field Force, as a Souvenir of the South African Campaign. 1899-1902, and in recognition of his unvarying kindness, attention and assistance, to all Ranks while Stationed at O'okiep, wishing him Many Happy Returns of his birthday 13th January 1902; the table lighter hallmarked for Birmingham 1900, modelled as an oil lamp and bearing a similar, shortened inscription. Note: The Cape Copper Company Medal for the Defence of O'okiep was a private campaign medal issued by the company in 1902 and awarded to members of the O'okiep Garrison who defended the town whilst it was besieged by Boer Commandos from 4th April to 4th May 1902 towards the end of the Second Boer War. Major Jonathan Leslie Dean who had been appointed Assistant Accountant of the company in 1886 was born in Glasgow in 1859 and died in Wandsworth in 1926. The garrison was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel W.A.D. Shelton D.S.O. and consisted of approximately 900 men and included local miners and civilians who assisted Shelton's troops. The civilian defenders were mostly employees of the Cape Copper Company and these included men of colour. After the war was ended the British Government awarded the Queen's and King's South Africa medals to all those regular troops who had seen active service in Namaqualand. When it transpired that the defenders of O'okiep, largely civilian and men of colour, were precluded from receiving these medals, the Company decided to strike a medal of its own to be presented regardless of race. The bulk were in bronze and awarded to the rank and file of the military and civilian defenders of the town most of whom were mine workers. A small number of silver medals, of which the subject lot is a rare named example, were awarded to officers and higher ranking mine officials such as Major Dean. Provenance: the medal, silver box and lighter all by descent to the vendor. Please see the following lot for letters relating to this lot.
