This is a recent acquisition and not one I have seen before.

Hallmarked 9 ct gold 25mm diameter.
Obverse: Embossed coat of arms of the Borough of Batley, Yorkshire.
Reverse: Inscribed " Borough of Batley, Presented to Private J. Rowles Batley Detachment 1st Vol Batt. K.O.Y.L.I. on his return from active service in South Africa June 1902"

The presentation of this medal was reported in the Leeds and Yorkshire Mercury on July 10th 1902.

The names of the members of the Batley Detachment 1st Volunteer Battalion The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry including Private J. Rowles are recorded on a tablet in Batley Town Hall.

7606 Pte John Rowles served in South Africa from 16th March 1901 until 11th May 1902 and was entitled to the QSA with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, and South Africa 1902.

Dunnboer,

That's a very attractive tribute medal and not one I recall seeing before either.
