Welcome to the Forum. What you have found with your metal detector is a distressed Queens' South Africa medal awarded to "17622 Shoeing Smith J.Hind" of the Royal Artillery. It is quite possible that someone stripped off the suspension and clasps for purpose of scrap value. Examples like that are sometimes seen and - I have to say - are a sad ending for an official award which represents a lot of hard work. I had a quick look on my CD for the Royal Artillery and saw that S/Smith J.Hind was awarded five clasps for his South African service. However, the actual Battery roll the medal was issued from was quite hard to decipher. Later today, I will see if I can do better from the roll.
Regards
IL.

Thankyou Linneyl
Yes it’s such a shame this medal has ended in the middle of a plough field. I’m sure Shoeing Smith J Hind must have sacrificed so much, It is strange to hold this medal and think about what this chap must have seen and encountered.
Thanks again for your welcome and help.

Hind appears to have been attached to the Worcestershire Company of the 17th Mounted Infantry, WO100/184 confirms he returned to Great Britain for discharge on the 23rd of June 1902.

Thankyou Frank.
It’s really great learning a bit more about this chap, the medal was found in a Staffordshire field. I wonder if Mr hind moved up this way.
