NAMED: NONE

SIZE: 55.4 mm

HERN'S CATALOGUE NUMBER: 930
HIBBARD'S CATALOGUE NUMBER: NOT APPLICABLE
GEORGE A. BROWN PAGE: NOT APPLICABLE

CASED: NO

CLASSIFICATION: WELCOME HOME MEDALLION

DESIGNER: UNKNOWN

OBVERSE: RAISED BUST OF THE DUKE / DUCHESS OF CORNWALL AND YORK, OVER VISITED CANADA 1901, SURROUNDED BY T.R.H.The DUKE AND DUCHES OF CORNWALL & YORK

REVERSE: CENTRAL CANADIAN COAT OF ARMS FLANKED ON RIGHT BY MEMBER OF ROYAL CANADIAN REGIMENT AND ON LEFT CANADIAN MOUNTED RIFLES OR STRATHCONA'S HORSE, ABOVE IN RIBBON CANADA, BELOW FOR CROWN AND EMPIRE OVER MAPLE LEAFS, ON LEFT SIDE IN SOUTH AFRICA ON RIGHT SIDE 1899 - 1900

NOTE: These medallions were presented to soldiers who had returned from South Africa and were being presented with their Queen's South Africa medals by the Duke and Duchess. I cannot confirm but it is understood that the bronze were given to enlisted and the silver to officers. The QSA's were presented without their bars which were forwarded to them later, that is why in a lot of cases the bars for Canadian medals are either missing of loose on the ribbon. Also shown with copy of program from presentation at Montreal, Quebec.

Mike,
What strikes me when I look at not just this medal but the others that you have shown is how much the peoples of the empire revered their soldiers and sailors, also the high regard which they had for the royal family.

The Royal Collection holds a gold example of this medal. If not unique, this variant must have been minted in very limited numbers. In this material, not listed by Hern or Laidlaw.
