From what I can find so far seven men from Barnstaple served with the Volunteer Service Company of the Devons and each was awarded this certficate and five pounds in cash. Private Greenwood's QSA was subsequently presented by Lord Roberts in Exeter in June 1901.

Best wishes,

Justin

Justin,

That's a great memento of the Boer War and looks to have been well looked after over the year.

Thank you for posting this.

Best wishes

In the event, George Albu shifted his ground and gave a suitably sycophantic speech to which Lord Kitchener graciously replied. The attached photograph shows George Albu giving the speech; Leopold is standing on the far right; and Kitchener is seated in the middle of the front row. An unknown number of gold medallions, made from the first new gold from the mine, were presented as souvenirs of the occasion. According to family tradition, Lord Kitchener, for unspecified reasons, returned this one to Leopold Albu.

Here are some further details on the presentation of the tributes to the Barnstaple men of the Volunteer Company of the Devonshire Regiment, taken from the North Devon Journal June 13 1901:
