Dear all,

Here is an unusual Boer War tribute cigarette case from the Beaumaris Corporation to a Private John Morris, 2nd Dorsets.

Unusually, he was a regular soldier rather a volunteer. It's a fine piece of engraving.

Cigarette cases do not seem to have been as common as medals, fobs and watches in terms of tributes from local communities. Has anyone seen other cigarette cases? There was one from Wallasey in the 1999 Spink Boer War sale.

Justin

Justin,

This is a great example with very intricate work. You're right that there do not seem to be so many around.

I wonder what percentage of solders at the time were smokers?
