Good Evening Everyone......

Picked up a couple of things at the show today, maybe more tomorrow......

This is an interesting ammo pouch which was purchased along with a BW period Mauser.......

I was to late to get the medals which were sold to some one else but were a QSA/KSA pair.......

The seller was the Great Great Grandson of the original owner.......

He stated that these things were left behind after his GGF had died and been in the house for years.......

I know family stories.......

But then again it could be real........

Anyway here are the pictures of the pouch..... What do you think.......

I think it is 'Natal Guides', not 'Natal Guards', The pouch is a real treasure - very rare, and possibly unique. The Natal Guides were few in number, but did great work during the Boer War. It is a pity about the medals. It would be well worth tracking them down, and, if they were indeed awarded to a Natal Guide, to make a generous offer to acquire them. The Mauser was presumably a 'spoil of war', and it is also a very collectible item.

I also think that great congratulations and celebrations are in order.

Regards
Brett

Good Morning Brett.......

I also thought Natal Guides but the seller kept on insisting Natal Guards.......

There is one interesting QSA though, to a member of the Imp. Yeo. with the usual 5 bars but he came to Canada and joined the North West Mounted Police and has the Coronation of George V and VI and Jubilee of George V....... There are a number of letters, postcards, and Photos of him in NWMP uniform wearing his QSA but the seller is asking way to much for it because of the NWMP connection......

The only Guards in Natal that I know of were those who were employed by the Natal Government Railways. I doubt very much that they carried ammunition pouches, and any pouches they did carry are likely to have carried the NGR initials.

That is a nice item. Judging by it's proportions, looks to be for pistol ammunition; 24 rounds in loops for either .450" or .455". I would imagine that the Natal Guides would have carried both a revolver and a rifle or carbine. Was there anything special about the Mauser longarm?
