I also would say that this is a circa WWII period example. Does it still have its sweat band?

Whilst they are merely illustrations, to actually describe them as slouch hat flashes is, at best, misleading and at worst, wrong, certainly by the time the British Army had adopted the slouch hat, some regiments, such as the Scots Guards did wear a flash, their regimental badges started to be worn by some, but many regiments simply wore them without a badge on the veldt.
The red melton cloth with white or slightly of white embroidery, was, in fact, simply an epaulette from their Home Service Dress tunic, cut down for use as a helmet flash and attached to the khaki cover, on the wearers left, often with another coloured piece of fabric on the right, to denote a particular company/squadron/battery and so on, the former should on be confused with the subsequent embroidered shoulder titles that became popular after the war on Home Service.
This practice soon started to disappear as casualties increased on the veldt.

thanks for the additional feedback, gentlemen! There is a sweat band, but it's in horrible condition. To further muddy the water, I found this photo, attributed to WWI period Gurkhas. Notice the snap (as found on my example). Sadly, no indication of flash color given...
