Hello Lads & Lasses,

This is my first post to share anything in my collection, so I thought I would start off with a very recent find that I'm rather chuffed about. Assuming the photo uploads of course - fingers crossed.

A Boer War period Wilkinson W-1064 Sportsman's/Horseman's folding knife.

I have been looking for one of these for yeas and this is the first example I have ever seen or heard of. Manufactured/offered by many companies, these type of knives were popular during the Boer War and through WWI. This one is super nice condition, just showing some wear/sharpening to the main blade. Stamped all over with various Wilkinson trade marks - eleven in total I think.

Cheerio,

Roy

That is interesting, Ray. I had not thought of British soldiers carrying pocket knives during the Boer War, but of course most must have had them, with perhaps only officers having the type you have shown. Every Boer had a pocket knife, otherwise they could not eat their biltong ration!
Regards
Brett

Hi Brett,

Thank you for that. We often think of the multi-tool pocket knife being a modern invention with the likes of Letherman and the Swiss Army knife etc but such knives became hugely popular during the inventive Victorian period. Although this example is not directly linking to the ABW specifically, it is of the time period and as mentioned, it is such a rare beast being by Wilkinson, I thought it interesting enough to share. Not withstanding my excitement of course in having looked for one for years. I do have another example by a different maker named to a RFC chap but of course that is WWI period.

Perhaps if anyone has any pocket knives in their ABW collection they would like to share, I for one would enjoy seeing them?

Cheerio,

Roy

P.s. I'm looking for any badges to Lumsden's Horse

Hi Mike,

Yes would love one of those. They also wore a specific slouch hat badge which was a monogramed LH.

Cheerio,

Roy
