Illustrated here is a nice little title found locally some time ago. Cut from c.45 thou sheet brass, it has tarnished deeply. The remains of the paper sticker on the tile's rear once bore the price. Long forgotten!
The Fifth Victorian Mounted Rifles was a quite large contingent (1,000 strong) and the bivouac of the unit's detached left wing was briefly over-run by Boers on 12/6/1901 at Wilmansrust.
Some mordant wit christened 5VMR as "The Fateful Fifth" and, in the best OZ tradition of giving a dog a bad name and then shooting it, it stuck. The Wilmandrust debacle was not entirely the fault of 5VMR - and the unit soon proved to be a potent anti-guerilla force. Stirling gives a good account of 5VMR's activities. They were in the field from May 1901 until they embarked for home at Durban on 3rd April, 1902.
