Hi Chaps,

Well first off, whatever this badge is, I bought it for no other reason than it really spoke to me, so if it turn out to me something other than I think, I'm fine as it was worth taking a chance.

So for your interest and comments I have a lovely 'SH' badge. Classic ABW period construction with lovely ornate letters. It was sold to me as Scottish Horse but as it is missing the centrally placed, lower case 'c' I have my doubts. My next thought is that it could be Steinaecker's Horse. The letters certainly fit and that's my best guess. However it does not match any examples I have seen.

If all the experienced and more knowledgeable members can help a chap out and share your opinions I would be most grateful ?

Cheerio,

Roy

I would go with Steinaecker's Horse. Whilst not identical to the rather plain title shown in Bill Woolmore's book or in Owen, the design of the initials in the item you show is similar to those in the design of their slouch hat badge.
I would not think the illustrated badge would be worn by the Scottish Horse. Their "ScH" title design appears to have been used to distinguish them from other mounted units with similar initials.
That is a very nice title. It would look remarkably well in my little display!!
Regards
IL.

Hi Linneyl,

Thank you for that, very interesting to read your comments.

I'm certainly leaning towards Steinaecher's Horse Linney, but I didn't want to get my hopes up.

I know there is a more ornate 'official' badge shown in Owen's (1771) but I was wondering if this example could be an earlier 'un-official', certainly locally made example.

I will hang on o it for a while Linneyl but you certainly have good taste..!

Cheerio,

Roy

If the letters were not joined together I would have call them: Strathcona's Horse.......

Hi Mike,

Forgive my lack of focus, could you explain a little more? I want to make sure I understand you correctly.

Hi Roy......

Strathcona's Horse had the same "S" and "H" but they were separate fancy letters, 50 pairs (50 S's and 50 H's) were made and they were made on the ship from Canada to South Africa from sheet brass with wire loops......
