This unnumbered example has just surfaced on eBay (item no. 305627668623).

My first impression was that this must be a recast. Either that, or it has been through an acid bath and then buffed to within an inch of its life.
The remnants of what appears to be the correct fixing pin to the reverse suggests that the latter scenario might be the correct one.

Neville I go for recast. Buffing doesn't add material and some areas (as well as the letters) in the medal under scrutiny seem to be larger than in the undisputed one.

That's exactly what I thought, Everhard - until I saw the remnants of the fixing clasp. This feature threw me, as its construction looks completely right.
