I recently picked up a metal box that I'm trying to identify. The seller thought it was an ammo box from WW1, but I have my doubts. As you'll see in the attached pics, it's made of galvanized steel and appears to have been painted with a transparent, greenish paint. The royal cypher V.R. is still visible on two sides, despite somebody's efforts to scratch off these painted markings. There's a handle on top, and a hole. All the joints have been soldered, as if it was intended to be watertight. Could this be a steam chest for an early machine gun? The hole is about the right size to accept a hose from the water jacket of a Maxim gun. The box itself, at 11" long by 7 1/2" deep and 12" tall, is the size I'd expect. If it's not a machine gun steam chest, does anyone know what it might be?
