Part of Col H B Orpen-Palmer's diary entry for 6 January 1900:
Among our killed were Col. Dick-Cunningham who was shot through the liver early in the morning and who had not yet recovered from the wound he got at Elandslaagte; Major Miller-Walnutt also of the Gordons a splendid big chap was also shot dead. I know both of them quite well as they used often to come up to tea to us. Another chap killed was poor young Ava, son of Lord Dufferin, who was shot through the head. He was galloper to Col. Hamilton and used to pass our post three or four times a day, and I had got quite intimate with him. Altogether the officers loss is, I believe appalling.
