I realize i might be a few years late, but I saw this photo and thought about these posts. Here is a photo of a Cape Rebel, by the name of Kock. This photo was taken a month before the end of the war, and was taken during his trail. What is interesting though, is the presence of what appears to be plastic/Bakelite/vulcanite buttons.

The first mention of Vulcanite buttons in the British newspapers I can find was in December 1879:



A black vulcanite button figured as evidence in the "Battersea Horror" murder case of 1889.

Bakelite was not invented until 1909.
