My Great Grandfather was in the South Lancs regiment. Sgt James Noonan. As I am not familiar with military uniform, can anyone advise if this could be a picture of him? It was found in family belongings. Many thanks

Hello Bines and welcome to the forum.

The uniform is WW1. However, there is a 5778 Sgt. J. Noonan on the QSA roll for the 3rd Battalion South Lancs. He was entitled to a QSA with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1901. It's noted that he was discharged time expired. This looks like your g-g-f.

Hi David,
Many thanks for your quick reply!
Ok so I know that my GGF wasn't in WW1 but I do have the same regimental number on letters he sent from South Africa.
So this chap must be someone else in the family??
Would there be a photo of Sgt Noonan in his military records do you know?
Many thanks

Hello Bines and I also welcome you to the forum.

I suggest that you contact the Regiment's museum. You never know, they may have a named photograph or other information.

The soldier in the photo could be in the Royal Engineers - the look of the cap badge and shoulder title would fit. On his right arm he has a chevron with three stripes indicating three years foreign service.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Thanks Rob
I shall ask around the family if anyone was in the royal engineers.
