Good Morning Everyone......

Just going to pick a few brains if possible..... At the Gun and Militaria Show this weekend I was able to pick up what I think is a Military Water Bottle / Glass Canteen..... It was described to me as being Boer War or Earlier..... The case and strap are leather covering a glass bottle, in the bottle it seems to be what remains of a cork, maybe broken off and just pushed in...... It is very dark leather and it looks like at some time the was a crest type marking but has worn off due to use......

I personally do not think that it is Boer War but maybe earlier but I don't think any earlier than 1850.....

Has anyone seen a water bottle like this one in a museum or even maybe in a private collection.....

Thanks for any assistance in advance......

Photos to follow......

Mike

Hi Mike,

The little I know is that this was the British Army water bottle used in 1815.

This from 1871.

And this at the time of the Boer War.

I wonder if yours is British?

The last image comes from one of Neville's posts on this website.

Hi Mike,
I think your glass bottle looks like a Hamilton flask-style bottle that would certainly predate the ABW by many decades

MC Heunis of the OVSAC living history group in Bloemfontein put together a monograph on water bottles of the ABW, and he has very kindly allowed me distribute it to forummers - the file is 7 MB, too large to attach here, but I'll gladly email it to anyone who contacts me (PM me or email me).

The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
