According to "Doctrine and Reform in the British Cavalry, 1880 -1918" by Stephen Badsey, some Regiments (of Cavalry) kept their swords and lances until the War's end (May, 1902). Further, "One issue was whether the cavalry should give up their lances and swords as part of weight saving. Some column commanders took a very firm line on this: Smith Dorrien gave the 5th Lancers, who were part of his column, the choice of leaving thier swords and lances, or themselves, being left behind when the column moved off." On the other hand, the 7th Hussars reportedly did use swords to effect at one action at Leeuwkop, 1/4/1902.
So, yes, some cavalry regiments did carry swords right through the war and some did not.
I very much doubt a fast moving unit such as GFC would have bothered much with the cavalry sword. Nicknamed "Gorringe's Light Oxen" they were intended to operate with a minimum of baggage. Of course, your GF may have obtained a cavalry sword on his own account and kept it as a souvenir. A nice thing to have.
BTW, welcome to the Forum.
