The badge from Elandslaagte would have pride of place in my collection! Thank you for showing it as it is useful in identifying which version of the badge was in use at that time.

Regards
Brett

To be found on a battle site makes it ten times more emotive for me......

You are very luck to have found it.....

Dudley, what an amazing find; to have a genuine ILH smasher hat badge from Elandslaagte.....

Brett, I do recall your post on Trooper Freshney and came across his mention in "the story of the ILH." Sadly, he was shot in the face and the bullet travelled down his body.
I did enjoy the book incidentally.

regards, Iain

It was picked up by a good friend from the outskirts of Ladysmith who also has a passion for these things. We often walked the battlefield and he pointed out where he had picked it up.

He knew that I was an instructor at the SA Army College at the time (responsible for teaching Campaign Analysis amongst other subjects)and often used Elandslaagte as an example of the tactics used in those days and gave it to me for "inspiration". It worked!! It also started the collecting of these slouch hat title type badges.

Regards
