Mahatma Ghandi was involved with this corps as were many of the local Indian community of Natal who felt that they wished to contribute something towards the war effort. Their main responsibility was getting casualties from the battlefield to the field hospitals.

Gandhi was present at Spionkop as a member of the IBC. At the same time both Louis Botha and Winston Churchill were there, thus making for three future Prime Ministers on the one battlefield!
