I have a friend who's grandfather served in the SAC during the Anglo Boer war. Evidently he retrieved a cavalry sabre from the site of the Modder River battle. The sabre is in good condition with few but legible markings. I'm assuming the trooper it was issued to would have some identification mark on the weapon to prove it was his. Is there a way to identify who the sabre would have belonged to? Were sabres given numbers which can be cross referenced? How did you know a particular sword was yours? I understand 'B' on the back of the blade donates it passed a "bend" test.
