I was recently shown a photograph of soldiers who appear to be in uniform of the Boer War period. I've attached a photo of one of the group. The shoulder title says 2 YW, I've tried to sharpen the image of the belt buckle with the limited software I have but just cannot make it out.

Does anyone know which unit this is ?

Regards
Rob

Hello Rob

Belt buckle will be standard issue, it is the shoulder title that shows the unit.

"YW" - not sure on that, "WY" would be West Yorkshires.

Hi Meurig

Thanks for the reply. It's the YW that's puzzling me as well, I just can't think what it could be.

regards
Rob

Helmet in left hand - rifle in the right? Would seem naturally how things would be done - but good idea for WY having chirality

Gentlemen
I also fleetingly wondered about a reversed negative - but the rifle bolts are on the RHS as they are. Is it possible that the shoulder title is NOT "2" over "YW" but "2" over "?W". The pic in question looks to be a cut of a larger shot; any hope of Rob illustrating that? I have to say that the pic is a very good one and full of character.

IL.
