Hi Everyone

Many thanks for your replies.

I have tried reversing the picture but you then find that the number 2 is the wrong way around so I don't think that's the answer.

I have added the complete picture and if you look at the shoulder title on the 2 lads on the front row on the right it looks to me that the letters are definitely YW, however I would like to hear your views.

The picture is an absolute cracker, I don't think I've ever seen a picture of this age which is so clear. It was bought by a friend of mine from an antique shop in Ilkley and the owner of the shop didn't know anything about it. I am just surmising that it dates from the Boer War from the uniform and equipment but I can't be sure as I'm no expert about that period, I'm more of a Great War buff myself so I'm hoping the expertise of the members of this forum can tell me if I'm
barking up the wrong tree entirely.

Regards
Rob

Hi Again

I had to reduce the size of the picture in the previous post to get it to upload and consequently the detail has been lost if you zoom in. I've attached a crop showing the 2 lads I mentioned.

Splendid picture!

You are definitely in the right era, looks very like a section of volunteers with the one officer before embarking for the war.

Looking again at the shoulder strap could it be "2 FW" - but I can't expand "FW"!

My wife, on her first look thinks it is "2 FW" as well.

Anyone?

"2 FW" it is. Which makes it even more puzzling!

Hi All

I've attached a blown up picture of one of the shoulder titles. It still looks like YW to me ! It looks like this is just one of those mysteries

Rob

All

But don't you love the fact that it is only the officer who has left his helmet on!!
