Frank,

Its was probably a good idea not attending and allowing that all too light paddle bearing your number to rise to the ceiling!

I did attend on both days, I bought well too, I wish I had bought more now, but, had not put together a plan, I should have gone down the day before on the 19th and spent that evening in London too!

David

Should I be surprised that you are able (allowed) to post PDF's from the NA on this forum? I understood that everything from the NA (and other such institutions) had to be paid for.

The paper about the KSA and Natal's volunteer regiments is interesting. It refers specifically to these regiments that had indeed stood down at the end of Buller's Natal campaign, except of course for the newly-formed Volunteer Composite Regiment. It was the same rationale that was applied to the Natal Police, in spite of the fact that the men on duty in Zululand stayed on active service until the end of the war.

I like to imagine officials in the War Office, who were used to dealing with the orderly and disciplined Imperial army, getting very annoyed by the unit-hopping and relatively disorganised Colonials making their ledgers untidy.

Regards
Brett

That is a beauty David. if his single clasp had been Elandslaagte I think the medals would have sold for substantially more.

Hi all,

I am looking for any records that might identify my ancestor HJ Bell, who was a gunner in the NLA and received the 1906 medal. He was part of 'C' battery that was formed at Pietermaritzburg, and I haven't been able to find him in any of the National Archives' PDFs uploaded in this thread. Does anyone know which WO100 register will list his name/details?

Thanks,
Sarah
