Hallo everyone

Major Foy is my latest find, and I am very excited. I've got it from the family, but unfortunately no paper work or photos (No background music as Henk put it.

But it got a few questions.
His SAGS is renamed and got the 1877-8-9 bar he is not entitled to. On the roll he is entitled to the 1877-8 bar. In David Biggins book p344, he joined Baker's Horse, in 1879 as Lieutenant. Self entitlement?

He got the 2 bar CGHGSM with the scarce combination(18) Transkei & Bechuanaland.

His QSA is engraved Frontier L.H. but on p95 of said book, there is only 1 QSA listed to a non officer. On p344 it is stated he joined the FLH.

His KSA shows again as Cape Police Distr.1

I would appreciate it very much if somebody can fill some gaps (valleys).

I hope everything shows allright as this is my first attempt with photos.

Thanks
Chris

Hello Chris

Lovely group and good photos.

The SAGS looks like a late issue - the naming is similar to WW1 issue medals.

Thank you Meurig

Is there a way to find out if he applied for a late issue, would there be any paperwork for it? Did he had to give back his original medal?
Somebody mentioned to me something of 'Cape Naming' but I still don't know what it means, as I can't think that different institutions are allowed to name medals.

Looks the he and Mr Ayliff (Major in Def of Kimberley roll) were closely associated, as they were working together when not in uniform.

Hello Chris

If there is a no note in the medal roll, then only place it would be noted is in his service papers, whether they exist for this man I don't know. Adrian Ellard on the forum is records expert.

"Cape naming" - an elusive beast. Blanks of certain Victorian medals were sent to the Cape to be named up, and so are different in style to medals named in England. There is apparently a list of "Cape named" medals but I've never seen it nor seen a definite "Cape named" medal. I gather they were engraved, so I am sure Foy's SAGS medal is not "Cape named".

As you've shown Foy was in two units (at least) during the 1877-9 period so he could well have served in 1879. The medal issuing authorities do make mistakes. A little more research should establish exactly who he served with and when.

Chris,

That is a fantastic find.

Foy, Louis Arnold. He enlisted as a Trooper in the Frontier Armed and Mounted Police and took part in the
Gaika and Galeka War 1877-78. He joined the CMR and was discharged in 1878. He saw service as
Lieutenant, Baker’s Horse, in the Zulu War 1879 and as Lieutenant, Baca Contingent, in the Transkei
Rebellion of 1881. He worked in the Imperial Telegraph’s Department, Natal and as Temporary Clerk to the
Resident Magistrate, Mr Ayliff. Promoted Sub Inspector, Cape Police 15 Jan 1888 and Inspector 1 Jan 1890.
During the siege he served as Captain, Cape Police (A Squadron) and later joined the FLH as Captain. He
earned the QSA (1) and KSA (2).

On my roll, I have his QSA as being issued off the CP roll. This was a presumption having not seen the medal at that point. It is engraved beautifully to the FLH.
