Colonel Albert Louis Salmond was the 9th son of Lt/Col James Salmond B.A, J.P. of Waterfoot Cumberland by his wife Emma Isabella the daughter of D'Ewes Coke of Brookhill Hall near Pinxton in Derbyshire, he was born in September 1852. Lieutenant in 1875 and Captain in the 1st Derbyshire Militia in June 1880. Captain with the 3rd Battalion The Derbyshire Regiment in December 1891. Major and Honorary Lieut-Colonel in the 3rd Battalion on the 10th September 1892. He was also the Honorary Major (i/c) of the 1st Royal West Surrey Cadet Battalion, (The Queens) in which he originated and formed in October 1890. A meeting was held at the Red Cross Hall in Southwark, London where Field Marshal Viscount Wolesely made a memorable speech supporting his formation of the Cadets. He took part in the ceremonies during the 1897 Jubilee and received the Jubilee Medal. He was also well known in the world of sport as a champion sculler and marksman. In 1900 he joined the Derbyshire Regiment volunteering for special services in South Africa. During the Boer War Colonel Salmond was attached to the 4th Battalion (Nottinghamshire Militia) and was also appointed to command a women's concentration camp, a duty he disliked and thought distasteful but completed his duties with tact and success. He assumed Command of the Battalion on the 19th October 1900 and was ordered to relieve Aberdeen. This he did, making a forced march and arrived in time to repulse a Boer attack which greatly outnumbered his own. He was rewarded with the district of Aberdeen and retained this post until he was incapacitated by enteric. He was later appointed commandant of Stormberg and was specially commended by his General. Colonel Salmond was also in command of the regiment at Port Elizabeth with a detachment held in Cradock. It was at Stormberg during an engagement with the Boers in which he received the fatal wound that ended a promising career. Colonel Salmond died from his wounds on the 4th August 1902 at Deelfontein from wounds that he received at Burghersdorp on the 31st January 1902 where he was wounded by an explosive bullet in the thigh, in fact he died after the 4th Battalion had returned home to England and he is commemorated on a gunmetal tablet in Southwark Cathedral in London.
