Good Morning Everyone.......

If you haven't noticed........

There is a quite rare bar combination QSA to the 5th Royal Irish Lancers on ebay right now......

www.ebay.co.uk item 1899-1902-QSA-BOER-WAR-MEDAL-5TH-LANCERS-5-CLASPS-RARE-ELANDSLAAGTE 301709093450

But

When I check my Cavalry list he is only entitled to the first two bars........

In my British Unit Breakdown:

5th (Royal Irish) Lancers

Clasps: CC (627), Nat (218), Rhod (52), RofM (2), Tal (4), Eland (417), DofL (475), TH (23), RofK (3), Paard (3), OFS (662), RofL (21), Drief (2), Tr (413), Joh (14), LN (15), DH (12), Witt (10), Belf (333), SA01 (277), SA02 (223)

If he got the: RofK (3), Paard (3) and Drief (2) he would have been one of either 2 or 3 people in the unit to get these bars......

Maybe someone can check ancestry.....

Confirmed on Ancestry /115p32.

Fortunately he has papers on FmP which confirm E & DoL only.

I don't like the rivet between DoL & RoK clasps. With the toning and pin clasp it looks the soldier "sexed up" his medal.

None of the 5th Lancers with the RoK, P or D clasps got any Natal battle clasps.

Hello Mike,
Quite frankly, this is a no brainer, both WO97 and WO100/115 are very clear indeed, moreover, Robert North would doubtless been holed up in Ladysmith until at least the 28th of February 1900 with his regiment, yet, John French marched out of Klip Drift on the 15th of the same month and relieved Kimberley, Paardeberg was fought between the 17th and the 26th of February 1900 and Robert North left for home on the 19th of May the same year, a couple of months after John French engaged the enemy again at Driefontein!
Very clearly, Robert North was a member of the Natal Army.
Or perhaps Robert North was a Time Lord, what do you think? :)
Kind regards Frank
