Killed in action at Magersfontein, 11 December 1899.

He is commemorated on the Stirling Castle Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders South African War Memorial (where his name is spelt Johnstone).

Hugh Moran served with the 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in South Africa during the Boer War, ands was additionally entitled to a King’s South Africa Medal.

He saw further service with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 10 August 1914 and was discharged on 6 September 1915 on the termination of the period of his engagement.

Alexander Jack was born in Dundee in 1877 and attested for service with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at Stirling on 2 September 1895. He served in India from September 1897 to April 1902, at which time he was posted to South Africa, serving in the campaign there with the 1st Battalion from 18 April 1902 until the conclusion of hostilities. He returned to England in May 1903 and transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1903. He received his final discharge on 1 November 1914.

During the Great War, Jack enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps on 17 February 1916 and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 25 February 1916. He transferred to the Royal Air Force as a Founder Member on 1 April 1918, and was appointed Air Mechanic First Class on 1 November 1918. He transferred to the Reserve on 27 February 1919, and was discharged on 30 April 1920.
