Greetings from Bermuda,
I was very fortunate to recently acquire the DSO, ABO, and DVTD to Major Vermaas . The DSO awarded for service in GSWA . Vermaas as a 21 year old was a pow on Burts Island , Berrmuda in 1901/02. The medals came with a Bermuda cedar inscribed box containing six napkin rings and inscribed by Vermaas. He shared a tent on Burt's with August Schulenburg , founder of the industrial association responsible for the making of pow souvenirs.
Some time back Henk kindly allowed me to purchase Schulenburgs ABO. There are some excellent photos of the pair together on Burt's. Nature has completely taken over the island today but this smallest of the pow islands remains a constant reminder of the events in South Aftica some 112 years ago,

Getting the DTD at age 21 sounds young - would be interesting to know more!

Joined boer commando in October 1899 , fought at magersfontein etc , shot in leg at Klerksdorp
and captured on 17th July 1901. Awarded ABO and wound ribbon and decoration. Later made claim against British for property loss. Pow on Burt's island, Bermuda with tent mate being August Schulenburg, well known pow and medical doctor.
Commanded vermaas scouts in ww1 and was a major in Calvinia scouts in GSWA . Awarded DSO and a MID for great service.

I am Pieter Arnoldus Vermaas's great-great-grandson. I would love to get in touch and hear more about Oupa Piet and see any photos you might have. I have a few stories that have been passed down through the family and I think we have some letters that he wrote back to family. Also, if you ever wanted to get rid of those medals, I am sure the family would love to have them.
