A medal from the Spink summer sale, Lt Magennis, Somerset East TG.

Described as:

William Babington (also Barrington) Magennis served in the Somerset East Town Guard from 12 January 1901 until 22 April 1901; an accompanying copied roll entry also states, 'Left Town'.. Born 1869, after Boer war he became Inspecting Magistrate and Inspector of Prisons, married Hilda May Neumayer in 1917 Capetown aged 48 (record states he was a widower), civil servant and magistrate all his life, died Wynberg aged 71 in 1940. The recruits were often pro British South African,(sometimes reluctantly joined British side) officially re-impressed naming, minor mark to face of monarch, IMO very fine condition with minimal wear, nice patina/tone, see pictures, comes with copy medal roll, for further research.

Spink did state the medal was officially renamed.

Captain T G Sephton was OC the Zeerust TG.

The Zeerust TG roll shows that the Transvaal clasp was claimed by the unit and the clasps were issued but recalled before the issue of the medal.

Thanks for posting that letter from TG Sephton.

As I pucharsed two medals last year to the Sephton family both who served in the Zeerust TG I wonder if a Sephton archive has been sold off, and scattered or is it a coincidence?

The London Medal Co are advertising this Beaufort West TG QSA . They claim that only 16 medals were issue but I believe it to be a net of 118 from the 218 authorised.
