I was comparing the Jamestown Mounted TG QSAs from today's auction and the last DNW to look for a explanation for the prices realised:

1. Spink, 25 July 19

Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (35 Pte. D. Diederichs. Jamestown M.T.G.), edge nicks, good fine or better.
Medal returned to Mint 5 January 1909 and issued 22 March 1910, when it was sent 'c/o A. Strausser, Oudtshoorne, Cape Colony.

With there being only a small gap between the medal being returned to the Mint and the issue I wonder if they found Diederich's original medal?

The roll for the Jamestown Mounted Town Guard in WO100/281p233 and 234 lists 40 names. The medals were issued after 3 August 1905. 9 were returned leaving a net of 31.

A note on the roll certifies that "all the people named on the roll took actually part in the defence of Jamestown on June 2nd, 1901".

From what I saw of some of the TG & DMT prices today there seemed to be a correlation between hammer price and #issued, would be interesting to see a graph of that.

What stood out was the lack of interest in the KSA to the Bushmanland Borderers, 17 issued, although the medal was "polished", a steal at £50.

I was pleased to get the Zeerust TG to E Sephton - a rare TG casualty. The cataloguer's note about two "E Sephton"s on the roll, senior & junior, I was hoping would put people off as I think I have solved the obvious question, "Is this the QSA to the casualty?".

Research to start, especially the circumstances of his death.
