QSA (1) Defence of Ladysmith (V.S.F. Turnley. Gnr, Natal Naval Vols:)

M&E say 'V .S. F. Turnley of the Natal Naval Volunteers is confirmed on the roll. He arrived at Ladysmith on 2 October 1899 and died of dysentery on 8 December 1899. He is mentioned in ‘The Boer War Casualty Roll’ by Palmer, and was the unit’s first casualty of the war. According to the medal roll 65 members of the unit received the Defence of Ladysmith clasp, the remainder of the unit were present with Buller’s relief force.'
