Hello Forum members,
Just thought I would share my latest purchase.
4474 Bugler Edgar Armitage KOYLI

QSA = Belmont, Modder River, Wittenbergen, Transvaal.

Edgar Armitage was born in Huddersfield in 1876, the son of George and Jane Armitage. Edgar worked as a collier; he attested aged 18 years and 5 months old on the 8th December 1893, his rank is given as Bugler. He had previously tried to join up but had been rejected due to being under sized. Upon joining he was 5 feet 5 ½ tall weighing 129 lbs.

Edgar served in the following places:

Home - 8.12.1893 to 28.2.1898
East Indies – 1.3.1898 to 16.2.1899
Mauritius – 17.2.1898 to 6.10.1899
South Africa – 7.10.1899 to 27.3.02
Home – 28.3.02 to 15.7.02
South Africa 16.7.02 to 29.10.02
Home 30.10.02 to 31.10.02
Reserve B 1.11.1902 to 7.12.1905
Reserve D 8.12.1905 to 7.12.1909

Edgar completed 16 years service, as indicated in his papers he was entitled to the following:

Queens South Africa Medal - Wittebergen, Transvaal, Modder River, Belmont
Kings South Africa Medal – South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902.

The 1911 census shows that Edgar is now married with two young daughters and living at 2 Tattersfield Yard, Staincliffe, Batley. He was working as a Tramway Motorman.

At the out break of the Great War, Edgar again appears to have joined up, dying on the 12/08/1914 in the UK, obviously an illness or training accident. As such he is not entitled to any First World War medals, but is entitled to a memorial plaque. No WW1 service papers remain for Edgar.
He is buried at the Hanging Heaton (St.Paul) Churchyard

Thanks for looking
Regards
Paul

Paul, Thanks for sharing. A fabulous pair and a great addition to your collection! Just wondering about the dates of service? There seems to be some overlap between his SA and home service?

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your kind comments and very well spotted on the dates.
My error in copying the dates from the papers, should read:
S.Africa 7.10.99 to 27.03.02
Home 28.03.02 to 15.0.02
S.Africa 16.07.02 to 29.10.02

Regards
Paul
