QSA (3) RoM DoL Tr (868 Tpr: R.Despard. Imp: Lt Horse.)

Richard Despard, born 14Oct1865 at Rathmolyon, County Meath, Ireland; son of Richard Despard and Sophia Louise Despard (nee Noble); completed his final years of education at The Abbey School, Tipperary; later travelled to Burma becoming a police officer; moved to South Africa where he farmed; as with many colonials loyal to Britain in South Africa he answered the call for recruits and joined the 1st Battalion, Imperial Light Horse.

He is additionally entitled to the SA01 for service in the SAC.

A nice, verified ILH QSA went under the hammer at Bonhams this morning.

QSA (3) RoM RoL Tr (782 Corpl.R. Snape. Imp: Lt Horse).

Hammer price of £500.

An example of the RoM / Elandslaagte / DoL combination in the next Spink auction

x695 Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Relief of Mafeking, Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith, Transvaal (211 Serjt: J. L. Murphy. Imp: Lt. Horse), very fine £250-300

James Lawrence Murphy served with the 1st Imperial Light Horse and was discharged on 12 October 1900.

The medal to Trooper Harding who served for 6 months in the ILH and died of disease.

x694 Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Transvaal (347 Tpr: H. T. Harding. Imp: Lt: Horse)

Hugh T. Harding served with the 2nd Imperial Light Horse from 28 November 1900 and died of disease at Piet Retief on 6 April 1901. He is commemorated on the Boer War Memorial, Saxonwold,
Johannesburg.
