QSA (6) CC, TugH, OFS, RoL, TvL, LNek (354 Serjt. J. Laing. Thorneycroft’s M.I.)

Medal and 6 bars issued to John Laing at Cape Town 29.4.05.

Served in Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry from 4.11.99 to 27.1.01 when discharged at own request.

Later served as a Private in Railway Pioneer Regiment from 7 August 1901 to 4 March 1902.

Philip Sydney Hill was born in New Zealand on 24 June 1882 and served with Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry during the Boer War, being discharged at his own request on 5 June 1901. He was a farmer upon his joining the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 15 December 1914 and served with the New Zealand Artillery on Gallipoli, in Egypt and on the Western Front, 1916-17, some two years and 265 days overseas. Hill was discharged on account of illness contracted during service on 3 February 1918. Returned to the fold with the Royal New Zealand Air Force during the Second World War, Hill died on 27 July 1966

His entry in Steinaecker’s Horsemen by the late Bill Woolmore gives further detail:

'PAUL, WILLIAM JOHNSON, Trooper No 1527; Born Scotland on 19th September 1873.

He served in both the 1896 and 1897 Campaigns in Rhodesia with the Mashonaland Mounted Police (1 year) and the British South Africa Police (1 year and 7 days) and earned the British South Africa Company’s Medal with clasp for the service.

Previous Anglo-Boer War service as Private 9167 in D Company of Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry from 23rd December 1899 to 9th November 1900.

Enlisted in Steinaeckers Horse at Pietersmaritzburg on 12th October 1901. A Baker, aged 28, height 5 foot 9 1/2, blue eyes, fair hair. Next of Kin: Mother, 19 St Leonards, Scotland. Discharged time expired at PMB on 12th July 1902 after the cessation of hostilities.'

QSA (3) Cape Colony, Transvaal, South Africa 1902 (7766 Pte R. Keith. Thorneycroft’s M.I.).

Pair to a family member: BWM; AVM (bilingual) (Sjt A. D. Keith 4th S.A.I.).

Alexander Dunbar Keith born Forfarshire Scotland, son of William Keith, having served in the South African Police for 2 years 161 days, age 25, attested for service with the 4th S. A. Infantry in Potchefstroom. He served in Egypt and France and was taken Prisoner of War in Delville Wood on 15 July 1916. Sold with copied record of WWI service which gives accurate details of his P.o.W. camps and movements in Germany and Holland till repatriated 8 November 1918.
