From the next Spink auction.

QSA (5) CC OFS RoL Ts SA01 (Lieut. W. Otto, Thorney: M.I.),

William Otto was severely wounded at the battle of Colenso on 15 December 1899. He resigned his appointment on 31 October 1901, and also saw service during the war with the Intelligence Department. His Medal was issued to him care of the Victoria Club, Pietermaritzburg.

Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantrymen were heavily engaged at Colenso on 15 December 1899, in common with the rest of Lord Dundonald’s Brigade of Irregulars. In particular they won high praise for their gallant attempt to capture Hlangwane. Casualties were consequently high, one officer and three men being killed and three officers - including Otto - and 27 men being wounded.

According to Droogleever's book, "Thorneycroft's Unbuttoned", Lt.Otto had previous service as a Trooper in the Natal Hussars (SAGS medal and 1879 clasp). Only shown as "OTTO" (no initial) in Dutton's "Forgotten Heroes"
3530 Sgt. William Davies had subsequent service with the Border Scouts, Discharged for misconduct and later served with Remounts (SA1902 clasp).
Two interesting chaps, indeed.

IL,

Many thanks for that information. What a shame about Otto's SAGS.

I had a quick look at the roll for Davies and he had a busy time! I wanted to check when he was discharged from the TMI as I thought he may have been entitled to the KSA rather than date clasps.

Davies served in C Coy of TMI between 27/10/99 and 14/9/01. Originally from Hereford, England. As you say, a busy career!
