I am currently cross-referencing some Wepener men who served in the Xalanga MR.

The WO100 index says the XMR roll is at the end of WO100/278 but it is not in the version available from TNA. It is also not in 279.

Has anyone ever seen this roll?

Were medals issued to any of the Xalanga units?

Hello David

For the Xalanga Border Scouts there are two officers listed on WO100-280p156 - no x-ref to other units though.

The TNA rolls are missing so many pages for the rolls 278-284, you need to download them from Ancestry.

Thank you Meurig.

I can see the 32 Xalanga Border Scouts men on the Ancestry pages.

Ancestry do not seem to have the XMR roll that ought to be at the end of WO100/278. The TNA download comprises 308 pages and the Ancestry images list 298. Both end with Trooper Warneford of the WPMR.

I know Ancestry are missing some KSA roll pages, so perhaps others.

There appear to be more than one microfilm version of the rolls; TNA, Ancestry and maybe my own that was filmed to order many years ago. I have not checked it for many years. Maybe it has the missing pages! When I used it I was not aware of any missing pages.

What you may need to do is to go Kew and look at the original rolls which are just fantastic - huge ledgers. Beautiful to work with. If you do, then call ahead and check you can get access. When I last used them it was a bit of a battle as the rolls were microfilmed so access was not allowed, I had to prove there were missing pages in the microfilm.

Meurig,

I'm sure it is the case that there are multiple copies of the rolls in existence. There are differences I have noticed with THA and Ancestry pages - often where there is an additional note pinned to the page. The Supplementary rolls suggest they are completed in triplicate so perhaps there are at least 3 copies?

I have only ever accessed the original rolls once and remember being amazed them. Having been accustomed to the 2D black and white microfilm presentation, the huge and colourful volumes were a great pleasure to use. It is a good idea to seek access before a visit. I will do that.

Many thanks
David
