Welcome to the Forum. Well, the medal/item is nothing to do with the South African Campaign, 1899-1902. Clearly, "Egypt", the rather odd-looking Sphinx and "1899 1900" refer to some sort of service in the named area. As far as I can recall, there were no active British operations in Egypt during 1899-1900; however there doubtless were troops there on Garrison duty. Some unit may have decided it needed some memento of it's service there. Could your GF give any details of a family member serving around 1899-1900?
