Arthur Mills was born in Littlehampton, Sussex in September 1878. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in October 1900. Mills served in H.M.S. Naiad, March 1901 - August 1904, and advanced to Stoker 1st Class in July 1906. He was ‘Discharged Dead’ at Torquay, 26 April 1912.

Herbert James Batstone was born on 7 December 1878, at Newchurch, Isle of Wight. He commenced naval service as Stoker Second Class in HMS Victory II, on 17 September 1897, and was advanced to Stoker, HMS Calliope, on 1 July 1898. He served in HMS Naiad from 19 March 1901 to 2 August 1904. He was advanced to Stoker First Class, HMS Berwick, on 1 July 1906, and Leading Stoker, on 10 August 1906. He was further advanced to Acting Stoker Petty Officer, HMS Goliath, on 20 February 1908, and Stoker Petty Officer, HMS Orion, on 19 February 1909. He attained the rank of Acting Mechanician, HMS Pembroke II, on 1 January 1912, followed by a posting to HMS Dreadnought, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in September 1912. He was confirmed as Mechanician on 31 December 1912. During the Great War he served in HMS Victory and HMS Caledon. He was discharged to shore on demobilization on 15 November 1919. He died in 1939 at Southampton.

Note: Batstone appears on the medal roll for the Queen’s South Africa Medal for service in HMS Naiad, but does not appear to be entitled to the Cape Colony clasp.

Arthur Hooper was born at Holloway, London on 11 September 1882 and was a bootmaker upon his joining the Royal Navy on 20 July 1899. He joined Naiad on 19 March 1901 and was landed as a Bluejacket later that year, being further entitled to the Cape Colony and South Africa 1901 clasps to his Queen's Medal.

Hooper was shore pensioned on 13 June 1905.

Nicholas George Ellis was born at St. Helens, Jersey, on 28 October 1880, and enlisted in the Royal Marines on Jersey on 13 August 1898. Posted to the Portsmouth Division, he served in H.M.S. Naiad from 19 March 1901 to 2 August 1904, and served ashore in South Africa during the Boer War from 6 to 19 November 1901; he also saw service in Somaliland.

Ellis was discharged on 5 November 1910, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day. He was mobilised on 9 August 1914, and served throughout the Great War.

He was finally demobilised on 21 March 1919.
