ALEXANDRIA – RANGERS 1877 / TOWN GUARD 1900 – A REUNITE
Good Day Everyone......
I would at this time announce the following re-unite.....
I first obtain the following for my QSA collection:
14 Private J. E. (James Edward) Nightingale, Alexandria Town Guard, No Bars as Issued.....
I understand that 26 medals were issued to Town Guard.....
There is a copy of the Medal Roll on line here but I am afraid that it is so faded that these old eyes are unable to read it but in the list of members as produced by Dr. David has his name is listed.....
According to my calculations from his Death Notice he would have been 62 when he joined the Town Guard, a real member of Dad's Army......
I also learned that he had served in the operations against The Galekas and Gaikas, and possibly The Griquas (Not sure of this).....
Therefore he would have been entitled to the South Africa Medal 1877-79..... On checking the roll (D. R. Forsyth) I was able to find the following.......,
Trooper J. E. (James Edward) Nightingale, Alexandria Mounted Rangers, Bar 1877-8
According to BBM 26 medals were Issued and Forsyth 42 Sent and 16 Returned for a total of 26 issued......
