The other day I received a QSA to William Henry Baasch who served with the Cape Colony Cyclist Corps in the Boer War. The medal itself is standard fare and his service had nothing remarkable about it. I was about to consign him to my "swap" list when, on delving a little deeper, I found that there was a photo of him and his bicycle in the South African Library in Cape Town.

Great was my joy and, after parting with the princely sum of R28 and waiting a few days, I received the high resolution scan you see below.

Mr Baasch is now, in my eyes, worth keeping! It does help that I have his father's Basutoland clasp CGHGSM as well....

The story will follow later for now I revel in the moment (something the Springbok team were doing on Saturday evening)

Regards

Rory
