Last purchase of 2019, a rare unit for the QSA - Griquatown Defence Corps.

Pte PJ Van Zyl

Thirty-seven names on the roll, 8 marked as returned and least two others issued off other rolls, making a possible 27 extant. The roll was made up in July 1901.

Medal appears re-pinned and a little bashed at 7 o'clock over the rank and first initial.

The unit is not listed in Tylden "The Armed Forces of South Africa".

There was a PJ van Zyl in the Warrenton DMT and National Scouts, but there is nothing on the medal rolls to link any of the entries as the same man.

"Worthy of further research" - anyone have info on this apparently short lived unit?

Excellent provenance then!

I guess you sold it on as it lacked any research potential?

I would have thought there would be some basic biographical details of the recipient to be found if the right sources were consulted.
