QSA (4) Cape Colony, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen (3809 Sgt. J. Etherington, 1st Rl. Sussex Regt.)

James Etherington was born in November 1867 at Upwaltham, Petworth Sussex and was a carter upon his enlistment in the Royal Sussex Regiment at Chichester on 23 January 1888.

He served in South Africa during the Boer War from 10 February 1900-17 January 1901, being discharged in February 1901.

James Beauchamp was born in Brighton, Sussex, in 1875 and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment at Chichester, Sussex, on 2 May 1893, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 22 February 1900 to 15 September 1902, and transferred to the Army Reserve on 14 January 1903. He was discharged on 1 May 1909, after 16 years’ service.

Peter Martin was born in Tunbridge Wells, enlisted 30/1/93, imprisoned for 28 days for drunkenness on duty 15/2/98, imprisoned for 3 days by civil power Victoria West, Cape Colony for drunkenness, discharged 29/12/03.

MM LG 23 July 1919.

Benjamin Gordon Aylwin was born at Siddlesham, Chichester, Sussex in 1879 and served with the Volunteer Company of the Royal Sussex Regiment during the Second Anglo-Boer War. A note of the medal roll additionally stating: 'Employed as a civil Baker by Mr. Ashley, Market Square, Bloemfontein'. He saw later service with the 2nd Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps during the Great War. In his retirement Aylwin was a Chelsea Pensioner.
