Hi Nic,

Would you like to post an image of the engraving? I'm interested to know what makes you think the engraving is modern; it could be original (contemporary).

Regards,
Sturgy

Hi Nic,

I'm assuming these are your photos you posted on the facebook page (if not I will remove the pictures).

Rest assured I believe they are not renamed and that they are genuine for the following reasons:

1. I also have faint lines on my engraved medals to the Calvary; I'm not sure why they show up and maybe some of the more experienced collectors can explain why.

2. They passed through the Noonans auction house; if they had any doubt they would have described it as such; they would have picked up the difference in diameter, slightly rough edge and slightly egg shape where the erasing would have removed the silver where previously impressed.

You have a nice group in your collection; well done and enjoy them.

Nic
Those very faint lines worried me many years ago when I ran into an engraved QSA named to an officer in the RIR. BTW, back then in OZ I had never seen an engraved QSA full stop. However the very faint lines were explained to me by a much more experienced collector as guide lines engraved by the tradesman to assist his naming alignment. Since then I have seen many such engraved QSAs and on some the guidelines are absent or else disappeared due to handling and time.
As Sturgy says, don't worry about them. I have not seen a QSA to 4DG for a while.
Regards
IL.
