George Ridgway 53rd Battery RFA. His regimental number was 6818. Believed to have been severely wounded at Lyndenburg on the 8th September 1900. Severe wound to hand and invalided out as medically unfit in May 1901. Would like to share some of my findings and research to date. Nice to find an actual image of George which appeared in a Sheffield archive entitled Sheffield at the Front. He was a driver originally and then a bombardier . I do not have his medal roll but his medal has 3 clasps Defence of Ladysmith , Laing's Nek and Belfast. He enlisted in the RA in 1894. He served for 3 years in India before going to the Cape. Sheffield born and bred and was a farm labourer, joined the RA aged 18. Had a quick search on the RA / RFA pages on the site but couldn't find a Ridgway or Ridgeway or his regimental number 6818...…..cheers Dave F

The medal roll (WO100/142) for 53rd Battery RFA confirms "6818 A/.Bdr. George Ridgway" earned the clasps D of L, LN, Belfast and his entry has the marginal note "invalided home". I checked his name in the Palmer Casualty roll and found no entry. If you go to the "Units" section of this site, you will find a short digest of the activities of the 53rd RFA during the ABW. Sometimes the Palmer roll misses entries from the official SAFF Casualty List 1899-1902 and I had a quick look therein for Ridgway/53rd RFA at Lydenburg 9/1900. No entry there, either.

IL.

Hi IL
Thanks for checking out George for me. I have been doing a little digging at my local library and found a little bit more info.
I have attached part of his military record which provides some detail on his wounding and the place it happened: regards Dave.
