The QSA (0) to Lieut D Hulley, Matatiele NC, was sold by City Coins in September 2003 and by Spink last year.

He served with the Matatiele Native Contingent from 7 August 1901 until 15 December 1901, having seen previous service as a Sergeant in the Umzikulu Reserve.

A disproportionate number of officers for only 42 on the roll?

Rory,

Tylden says the Matatiele Defence Force (Perhaps split into the European Reserve and Native Contingent?) had 'a strength of about 100 Europeans and 50 Natives' so I am presuming the native element was not recognised when it came to issuing medals.

I make it 74 and 41, respectively. 115 is close to Tylden's figure.
