This corps, which was raised by Major Vallentin, was largely composed of surrendered Boers, was employed on the Standerton line, their duties being chiefly to protect the line and the possessions of surrendered Burghers in the neighbourhood. But they did more active work, and on 24th May 1901 were credited with a smart capture of a laager, when they secured 9 armed prisoners and much stock. Major Vallentin was wounded on this occasion. On 24th July a party of the scouts fell into an ambush, and 4 were killed.

The medal below is to Edward Faux Hopkins, a resident of Heidelberg (in the then ZAR), a Sanitary Inspector with the government, who threw his lot in with Major Vallentin.

Had he survived, Major Vallentin would have had quite a story to tell.

QSA (2) Transvaal, South Africa 1901 (Tpr: H. G. Parris. Val Heidleburg [sic] Vols.).

M&E say 'H. G. Parris of Vallentin’s Heidelburg Volunteers is confirmed on the medal rolls, and also served with the 1st Scottish Horse (No. 202). The roll also appears to state, in a later handwritten note: ‘Alias Daniel Shea’ and ‘R. Dublin Regt’.'

WO100/281p177 (Heidelburg Volunteers) suggests his QSA was issued off the roll for the Scottish Horse.
