These are simply lovely scarce things, imagine fighting throughout the Tugela campaign, certainly hard enough without perhaps actually witnessing the downfall of some of your close friends and if you were serving in the wretched Nanny Goats, your own Colonel.
To then be followed by the dash to Mafeking with both the mental and physical effort that was required to successfully complete it.

Two hard fought and much valued clasps, Frank.

I think people like to the RoM clasp to an Imperial unit.

QSA (4) Relief of Mafeking, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal (Pte., R Hughes, R. Welsh Fus.);
KSA (2) (Corpl., Rl. Welsh Fus.).

DNW December 1991 £380.

QSA (5) Relief of Mafeking, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Orange Free State (5086 Pte. G. Haylock, R. Welsh Fus.);
KSA (2) (5086 Corpl., Rl. Welsh Fus.).

George Haylock was born in the Parish of Sawston, Cambridgeshire, and was a milkman by trade before enlisting into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Wrexham on 10 July 1896, aged 20 years. He served during the occupation of Crete in 1897-98, and in the Boer War 1899-1902, with Barton’s Fusilier Brigade for the Relief of Mafeking, and subsequently at the Relief of Ladysmith. Promoted to Corporal in August 1902, and to Sergeant in May 1903, he was transferred to the Army Reserve later that year, and finally discharged on 9 July 1908.

DNW December 2005 £580

QSA (5) Relief of Mafeking, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Transvaal (6478 Pte., 2nd Royal Fus.);
KSA (2) (6478 Pte., Rl. Fusiliers);
1914-15 Star (G-7753 Cpl., R. Fus.);
British War and Victory Medals (SR-7753 Sjt., R. Fus.)

Frederick Downes was born in Stepney, London. A member of the 7th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, he attested for regular service with the Royal Fusiliers at Hounslow on 1 July 1898. With the 2nd Battalion he served in the Boer War, 22 October 1899-25 March 1902. Early on in South Africa he served in the 100-strong Barton’s Fusilier Brigade, earning the clasp for the ‘Relief of Mafeking’. In March 1902 he was posted to the 1st Battalion in Burma, where he served until November 1903, then in India where he served until February 1911. He was discharged on 30 June 1911.

Returning to the Colours for the Great War, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 29 November 1914, serving as a Corporal in the 8th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. As a Sergeant in the 8th Battalion he was killed in action on 27 August 1916. He was buried in the Agny Military Cemetery.

DNW March 2014 £780

QSA (5) Relief of Mafeking, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Orange Free State (3373 Pte. T. Wedge, R. Welsh Fus.);
KSA (2) (3373 Pte. T. Wedge, Rl. Welsh Fus.)

Thomas Wedge, who enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in October 1891, aged 18 years, served variously in India, Malta, Crete and Egypt, in addition to participating in operations in Barton’s Fusilier Brigade during the Boer War. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1903 and settled at Rodington, Shropshire, where he was employed as a railway worker for nearly 30 years

DNW September 2016 £1,000

QSA (6) Relief of Mafeking, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, unofficial rivets between fifth and sixth clasps (2321 Pte. W. Graham, 2: R. Scots Fus:) edge bruising, nearly very fine

W Graham served in South Africa during the Boer War as one of ‘Barton’s Fusilier Brigade’ which comprised 2nd Royal Fusiliers (27 men), 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers (20 men), 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers (1 officer and 25 men), and the 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers (1 officer and 25 men). With the exception of a very few ‘odd men’ in other units, these were the only Imperial troops present at the relief of Mafeking.
