I would like to ask for help in identifying medals with the clasp Defence of Mafeking. This is in preparation for a book on the QSA with clasp Defence of Mafeking which is estimated to take 18 months.

These are the units I have identified so far. The numbers after the colon represent the number of medals identified for that unit.

For some of the units, this is an accurate number but, for others, more work is needed to confirm the entitlement and to which unit the medal was named. There are duplicates and omissions in this list but this first pass aims to identify the units that received the clasp.

The Buxton FID book shows three DofM clasps to FID or, (presumably the Intelligence Corps). Had a trawl and found Capt. Smitheman DSO with DofM amongst others (Rhodesia Regt). Found another who was in the Bech.Rifles - but not the third supposed DofM clasp. Will have a better look on the actual roll tomorrow.
Best regards
IL.

Mike,

Baden-Powell's medal is, I think, possibly named to the SAC.

The other SAC men come from the Protectorate Regiment (9), Bechuanaland Rifles (2), BSAP (1) and Cape Police (1).

The SRG man previously served in the Protectorate Regiment.

The 2 staff are Lord Cecil and Major Vyvyan although the latter's medal may have been issued off the East Kent Regiment roll.

Kind regards
David

Thanks, Mike.

I think there is one other. Trooper W C K Sheppard who served in the Canadian Scouts (36818) as well as Steinaecker's and Roberts' Horse.
